About

Welcome to my blog!

My name is Anand, and I was a 2009-2010 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from the United States to East Africa.  The Ambassadorial Scholarship sponsored my Master of Public Health (MPH) degree at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I just finished my first year of medical school at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I am now back in East Africa in Kampala, Uganda as a 2011 HIV/AIDS Care and Treatment intern for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under its Global Health Fellows Program. Follow me on my adventures here in Africa as I learn, discover, serve, and live. Feel free to comment, and I will try my best to keep you all regularly posted. Enjoy!

  1. Hey!

I’m a UIC undergrad, and Jennifer Kosco told me to say hi. :) She suggested I get in contact with you because I’ll be doing my own research in Egypt this summer at a bioarcheology field school in Amarna, Egypt. For most of the time I’ll be entirely isolated there, but for the first few days I’ll be in Cairo, Saqqara, and other places with my classmates. I’m really interested in hearing about your experiences there! This is my first trip to a non-Western country (I went to France last summer, a decidedly different experience!), and I’m set on learning all I can before departing in May. Nice meeting you!

  2. Hello! That’s great that you will be going to Egypt – it was an absolutely unbelievable experience for me when I went in summer of 2007. I definitely have tips to offer you, so send me an email at anandsandesara@gmail.com And tell Jennifer I say hi as well!

  3. Hello Anand,

I am a video producer at the University of Tennessee. I’m producing a story about the resettlement of Burundians with refugee status to the Tennessee area. The story focuses on partnerships here at UT that are helping Burundians learn how to adjust to life in the United States (teaching english and pre-GED classes, youth programs, job training, health care, etc.).

I’m hoping you would be willing to share some photos that you took in the Burundian refugee camps in Tanzania. I’ve had trouble finding good images to help me tell this part of the story. We hope this video will help bring more attention to the situation and hopefully more funding to help the cause.

    Best,

    Nick Chafin
